Chester who was known as Chet for the majority of his life, but in his later years, found he was starting to like it when his full name was used was born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey. Growing up, he enjoyed sports of all kinds, becoming quite the accomplished athlete. A former Hudson County swimming champion, Chester, along with his brothers, developed what became a nearly lifelong passion for roller skating. During the 1950s, he won many top awards as both a speed and artistic skater. Chester was especially proud to be a 1956 New Jersey State Champion in Senior Men Speed, Relay, and North the 1957 America On Wheels Champion in Senior Men; and the 1957 United States Champion in Senior Men Speed. A proud American, Chester always held those who serve and first responders in high esteem. Chester himself served as an Antiaircraft Machine Gunner and Cannoneer in the National Guard of New Jersey and the United States Army Reserve, and was honorably discharged in 1961. During his service, he was awarded Expert Qualification Badges for Carbine and Rifle M1, which were presented to him at Camp Drum, New York. Chester worked at the Bendix Corporation in Teterboro, New Jersey, for an incredible five decades. During his years there as a Machinist, Chester was extremely proud to have worked on systems for the Apollo 11 spacecraft, the Saturn V rocket, and the Space Shuttle Columbia. He also served as a Shop Steward for his labor union, UAW Local #153, for many years until his retirement, and then as a recording secretary for his retiree chapter. Over the years, Chester continued to be a very involved member of the roller skating community. He became a speed skating coach at several roller rinks in New Jersey, including Wayne, Wharton, and Morristown, and also coached roller derby. Chester trained hundreds of skaters over the course of his career, some of whom went on to win numerous national, state, and regional championships. During his retirement, Chester enjoyed all the things he loved in life. On many a hazy, lazy summers day, youd find him with his fishing pole in hand and one of his trusty fedoras on his head, seated comfortably along the waters of Point Pleasant Beach. Chester would get in his beloved van and drive down the shore, sometimes for days at a time, where he would fish, play games at the boardwalk arcades, have a few drinks at the Tiki Bar, and eat seafood to his hearts content (no shellfish were safe with Chet around!). On the days he wasnt soaking up the sun, hed be swimming laps at Spa 23, feeding the birds (and the squirrels and chipmunks and rabbits) that visited him outside his apartment window, or taking a nap in his easy chair after watching one of his favorite movies (ranging from modern action-adventure to spaghetti westerns to classic monster films). And he always looked forward to Halloween, his favorite holiday by far, when he could put up all his spooky decorations and then enjoy what he liked the best: seeing all the costumes and handing out lots of treats. But what Chester truly loved most of all was spending time with his family and friends. A die-hard fan of the New York Giants and the New Jersey Devils, Chester would often take his loved ones to hockey games at the Prudential Center and have them over his place to watch football. He was very fond of backyard barbecues, especially when he was the grill master (T-bones were his specialty). He loved to go crabbing with his brothers, have drinks at Jiggs and Thatcher McGhees, and take others out to dinner. His all-time favorite restaurants were Red Lobster and Jack Bakers Wharfside, where he would devour any and all types of seafood (most especially crab legs). And he particularly loved getting together with family and friends on holidays, for birthdays, and for all special events times when everyone would laugh, relax, and just have fun. One of Chesters greatest joys in life was being with his beloved granddaughter, Meagan. From the moment she was born, Chester was her devoted Pop Pop and she was his Princess. He spent countless hours playing with her when she was a baby, took her on her first trip to Disney World, went to all her school events, made her favorite pancakes and French fries whenever she wanted, and even taught her how to play poker. He cherished every minute they spent together, and he loved her more than words can say. Beloved Dad, Pop Pop, Brother, and Friend we celebrate your life and remember you as we know you would want us to: as the cheerful, kind person you were, who made friends easily wherever you went, who cared for others, and who loved his family above all else. We love you.
