John (Jack) W. Rippey Jr., age 87, of Pompton Lakes passed away at home with loved ones by his side on Monday, October 2, 2023. He was born in Paterson NJ on April 19, 1936, son of the late John Sr. and Elizabeth (Walsh) Rippey.
He graduated from Paterson Tech and Vocational school and was a member of the Army from 1959-1961, serving in Korea. His early profession was that of carpenter but later joined the Erie Lackawana Railroad. That started a long career with trains, later working for Conrail and NJ Transit retiring in 2000. Throughout the years he continued to work in carpentry and masonry.
At the age of 18 Jack met the love of his life, at 22 he married Audrey (Krisco) Rippey and the two would spend the next 65 years together. They have so many wonderful memories creating a happy life and loving family together.
Jack loved the outdoors. He enjoyed playing golf and was known to feed the ducks in a nearby river. His neighbors in Pompton Lakes know that he could be found in front of his house sweeping the street to keep his section neat and clean. Jack had the gift of gab and enjoyed talking to everyone, at anytime, anywhere. If you came upon him sweeping his street, or anywhere else, he would always take the time to have a conversation with you.
He was a wonderful father and provider. He was the dad who always showed up for sports games, no matter what his schedule. We have many great memories of family vacations, especially going to Myrtle Beach SC. He loved studying road maps, and we consider him the original GPS. Even though we would drive to Myrtle Beach every year, for about 25 years, each trip he would study a paper atlas and always give his son, Jack, a little handwritten card with all the roads and turns. There was also always a lot of discussion on the best route to take.
He is survived by his wife and their two children, Marlo Rippey of Pompton Lakes and Jack Rippey (wife Sandra) of Oak Ridge, NJ and a loving sister, Marilyn Rutkowski and husband Frank. He leaves behind a cherished grandchild, Daniel Rippey and his wife, Deanna, of Oak Ridge, NJ. Also surviving are many dear nieces and nephews.
