Ann M. Cornell (nee Hartman), a beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Butler, NJ on February 8, 2026, at the age of 89. Born on June 25, 1936, in Englewood, NJ, Ann was a remarkable woman whose warmth and kindness left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Ann's life was rich with love and devotion. She attended Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Tenafly, NJ, where her strong values and spirit began to flourish. She was a graduate of Tenafly HS in Tenafly, NJ before beginning her career working for NJ Bell. She met the love of her life, George, over her cousin’s back fence as she told the story and after a brief long-distance romance she married her handsome sailor, George, and eventually settled in Virginia Beach, Va.
Ann’s friendly personality shone through to everyone she met and while she never wanted to be a burden on those around her, she often found the kindness of strangers in the places she went because people could not help but respond to her sunny nature. She nurtured a deep bond with her family and neighbors, making each of her relationships a testament to her caring heart.
A passionate crafter, Ann found joy in creating beautiful works of art that she shared with family and friends. Nothing brought her more happiness than spending time surrounded by those she loved, including her two faithful feline companions, Una and Sadie. The moments spent with her family were precious to her, and she delighted in watching her grandchildren grow and thrive.
She is survived by her son, George E. Cornell, and her cherished grandchildren, George R. Cornell II and Alissa Cornell. Ann's loving spirit also lives on through her dear niece, Lisa Sherman, as well as her great nephews Brian Sherman and Eric Sherman (Veronica), and great niece, Carly Sherman. Her friendship was a gift, treasured by many, including her dear friends Jeane Holmes, lifelong companion Barbara Moscone, and her extended Virginia Beach family—the Urrutia’s—Wendy, Rob, Katherine, David and Thomas and Tonya Williams. Ann spent the last years of her life being cared for by a wonderful group of angels from Atlantic Hospice of NJ. Ann looked forward to her daily dose of sunshine, Joy. She was an unexpected blessing in Ann’s final years and she loved her dearly.
Ann now joins her beloved husband, George R. Cornell, as well as her dear sister and brother-in-law, Kay and Tony Chiusano, and her brother, Earl Hartman, in eternal peace. Their memories will forever echo in the hearts of those who remain, and their legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire future generations.
As we reflect on Ann's life, we remember her as a pillar of kindness and compassion, whose legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched. Her spirit will be missed, but her love will always be a guiding light for her family and friends, reminding us all to cherish each moment and support one another through life's journey.
