Dorothy Sekkes

July 25, 1938 — August 25, 2026

Pompton Plains

Dorothy H. Sekkes, beloved mom, grandy, sister, aunt, and dear friend, passed away peacefully at home on August 25, 2026, at the age of 88.

Born in Paterson and raised in Haledon, Dot was the second child born to J. Henry Vitz and Elizabeth Vitz (née Harding). She graduated from Central High School in Paterson.

After high school, Dot was a clerical administrator at various companies. On a blind date set up by a friend, she met the love of her life, Bob, and they shared a full life together for 55 years. Soon after marrying, their daughter Debbie was born, followed 5 years later by the birth of their son Scott.

Dot took special joy in Debbie and Scott, and was a constant loving, guiding, presence in their lives as they grew. Her generous, giving nature extended into her communities. She served as President of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation chapter in Wayne. Dot also volunteered on the local board of recreation, and faithfully attended church services, setting a lifelong example for her children. She and Bob served as youth group leaders at Grace United Methodist Church in Wycoff, further spreading their faith to others.

One of the happiest days of Dot’s life was when her twin granddaughters Kylie and Kelsey were born. They were her ultimate pride and joy. She doted on them and cherished them with her whole being.

Dot is survived by her daughter, Debra Pitt, her sister, Joan Higgins, her granddaughters Kylie Michelle and Kelsey Ann Pitt, her dearest relatives and friends, and her beloved care-giver Annie.

She was predeceased by her loving husband Robert J. Pitt, and her son Scott Allen.

Visiting hours will be held from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, Friday, August 28, at The Morrison Etheridge Funeral Home.
