Emblem

Gerald J. Tooley, a man of unwavering strength, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2026, at his home in Kinnelon, New Jersey, surrounded by his beloved children. Born on June 13, 1933, in Ogdensburg, New York, Mr. Tooley lived a full and meaningful life marked by service, hard work, and a deep love for family.

Mr. Tooley was proud to have served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, a chapter of his life that he held with great honor and with a true love of America. It was during his time in the Air Force that he was introduced to the love of his life, his wife Maryann by her brother while in basic training. After his honorable discharge, Gerald and Maryann came back to the East Coast and ultimately settled in Kinnelon in 1964 where they designed and built their family home.

Gerald had a long, respected career as an executive in the printing industry. He attended William Paterson University where he studied business administration. His work ethic was exemplary, and he was known for being stoic, smart, and talented. Once retired, he was given an opportunity for a second career at Indian Hills High School where he worked up until the age of 80 when he officially retired.

Gerald enjoyed playing golf, spending quality time with his friends “raising a pint”, fishing, reading, gardening, snow birding in Naples, FL, and caring for his pets. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees. His favorite baseball catchphrase: “Strike ‘em out, and if you can't strike ‘em out, pop it up,” captured both his love of the game and his spirited approach to challenges in life.

Gerald's family was the cornerstone of his existence. Everything he did was for his family. He is survived by his children Robert (Lorraine), Suzanne, and Karen; grandchildren Ryan (Sarah) and Sean (Sarah) Tooley, Stephen (Melissa), Richard (partner Vanessa) and Katie Hack, and Sam (Taylor) Tooley; as well as six great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his devoted brother, Ronald Tooley. He will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all who shared in his life.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Maryann; his infant twin sons Richard and Michael; his adored daughter Joanne and son Michael; and his cherished grandson Jake.
