Michael J. Mathis, “Mike,” passed away after a short but courageous battle with cancer on August 8, 2025, at the age of 71. Born on December 19, 1953, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Mike lived a life marked by hard work, humor, and unwavering love.
A skilled electrician by trade, Mike dedicated his career to his craft, known for his precision, problem-solving, and willingness to lend a hand. Outside of work, he found joy in fishing, watching football and golf, and swapping stories with friends and family—always with a quick wit, a clever remark, and a hint of sarcasm that kept everyone smiling.
Of all his accomplishments, none meant more to Mike than being a father. As a devoted single parent, raising his daughter was his proudest achievement and the center of his life. He poured his love, time, and energy into being her greatest supporter and protector, a role he cherished above all else.
Mike was equally devoted to his life partner of 18 years, Carol, with whom he shared countless adventures, quiet moments, and steadfast companionship. He was also affectionately known as “Papa Mike” by his step-grandchildren, who adored him and will carry his memory in their hearts.
Mike is survived by Carol Legreid, his loving partner of 18 years; his daughter, Michaela Mathis, and her spouse, Kevin Kavanagh; stepdaughters Vanessa (Keith) Moran and Brigitte (Mike) Rose; and step-grandchildren Madelyn, Michael, and Elodie. He is also survived by his brother, Arthur (Nancy) Mathis; sisters Susan (Phil) Lindgren and Linda (Sandra) Mathis; and his favorite furry companions, puppies Milo and LD, and cat, Sammy.
Mike will be remembered for his sharp mind, big heart, and the ability to make people laugh no matter the circumstances. His legacy will live on in the love he gave, the lessons he taught, and the countless memories he leaves behind.
